Ford Hires Santos Virtual Soldier

After GM announced its R2 space robot, how long could it be before the Blue Oval had something futuristic to show off? Ford recently introduced Santos, a new virtual-reality stress-testing digital man.

Santos, derived from the Department of Defense's Virtual Soldier Research program, is Ford's next stage of virtual work assistance. He works in a simulated Ford factory and measures the effects of real-world stress by combining a "complete biomechanical muscular system" with "predictive dynamics".

Ford ergonomics technical specialist Allison Stephens thankfully explains it in layman's terms:

New models also come with standard safety equipment including anti-lock brake system which enables the computer to take over from drivers in critical driving conditions. This advanced system is needed for a vehicle which offers 210mm of ground clearance and one of the most powerful Duratorq TDCi engines in its class. To add to this convenience, all Ford Endeavor come with 2nd row 50:50 split and double folding seats to provide extra luggage space. The DVD system and SANTAV navigational systems are offered as low cost add-on accessories. Independent control for rear AC, large illuminated glove boxes, armrest with storage bins and clutch footrest are standard equipments that have been included after analyzing various customer satisfaction surveys. The Ball & Nut type steering with variable power assist are also the defining features of this SUV.
